Closing of Emergency Shelter

PRESS RELEASE

CLOSING OF EMERGENCY SHELTER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kahnawake – May 28, 2021) The Kahnawà:ke COVID-19 Task Force has authorized the closure of the Emergency Isolation Shelter that was opened in April 2020, to help mitigate the transmission of COVID-19 within the community of Kahnawà:ke.

Kahnawake Shakotiia’takehnhas Community Services (KSCS) requested approval to close the shelter in light of the community reopening plan, and based on the lack of requests for the service over the past several months.

The shelter was specific to:

  • Individuals who have recently travelled and are returning to Kahnawà:ke;
  • Health Care workers (Essential Services) who do not want to risk getting infected by their family members and thereby expose their patients or co-workers;
  • Health Care workers (Essential Services) who do not want to risk being infected at work and thereby expose their family members.

KSCS Executive Director Derek Montour noted, “This closure is a positive step in the reopening of the community, and we are thankful that the need for this service has tapered off. As an organization, KSCS has answered the call to offer emergency essential services throughout the pandemic, and the coordination of the shelter was no exception.”
