PRESS RELEASE

VACCINES REQUIRED FOR VISITORS TO LONG-TERM RESIDENCES

For immediate release

(Kahnawake – August 30, 2021) Kahnawake Shakotiia’takehnhas Community Services (KSCS) announced today that effective September 1, 2021, all visitors to the Turtle Bay Elders Lodge and the Independent Living Center must have received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in order to be granted access to these facilities.

The change is in response to the news that Kahnawà:ke is now in a fourth wave of the pandemic, with the Delta variant accounting for the majority of current COVID cases in the community. “The Delta variant is more transmissible than its predecessors,” said Executive Director Derek Montour, “lasts longer in an individual’s system (so spreads to others over a longer period of time), travels farther to other people, and creates greater impact when contracted. For the safety of our clients and staff, we are taking these proactive measures to keep all our residents safe. The last thing we want is a forced shutdown in one or both facilities due to a sick resident or employee.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, none of the residents at either facility have been diagnosed with COVID-19.
