• MHFA Training for Adults who Interact with Youth

We will be hosting a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for Adults who Interact with Youth training for community members and those affiliated with our community

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved.

Mental Health First Aid for Adults who Interact with Youth (aged 12-24) discusses the following mental disorders:

  • Substance use disorders
  • Mood disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Deliberate self-injury

The details are as follows:

  • Date:     Thursday, January 12 and Friday, January 13 (Two day training)
  • Time:    8:30 AM to 4:30 PM both days
  • Place:    KSCS Ohkwari Room
  • Cost:     Free for community members and affiliated workers.  $40 for those not affiliated with the   community
  • Trainer: Christine Taylor

Space is limited. Please let me know if you are interested in taking this training. The 14-hour course is certified by Mental Health First Aid Canada and you will receive a certificate from the Commission.

Multigenerational Trauma and the Impacts on Attachment and Bonding

Workshop Objectives: 

Facilitate an understanding of ‘Attachment’ 

Understand how different kinds of interactions with children can create different types of attachment patterns in children 

Gain a better understanding of the emotional impacts that historical trauma and colonization has had on First Nations people 

Discuss and review some of the developmental impacts of intergenerational trauma (exposure to domestic violence, addictions, neglect, separation) on children 

Discuss the importance of, and strategies for, developing strong bonds and attachments with children

We will be hosting an open ASIST workshop targeted to all community members and those affiliated with the community free of charge. Reduced fee of $30 (cost) will be charged to those not affiliated with the community.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first-aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may be at risk of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop—ASIST can be learned and used by anyone.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is for everyone 16 or older—regardless of prior experience—who wants to be able to provide suicide first aid. Shown by major studies to significantly reduce suicidality, the ASIST model teaches effective intervention skills while helping to build suicide prevention networks in the community. ASIST is the world’s leading suicide intervention workshop.

  • Date: Thursday, March 17 and Friday, March 18th
  • Time: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM both days
